The plan

Day by day

  1. Day1

    Schiessentümpel Waterfall & Kallektuffquell

    Morning
Schiessentümpel — the little stone bridge and waterfall. Arrive early for quiet and parking.
    Afternoon
Hike or drive to Kallektuffquell, a mossy, tranquil spring.

Tip: Trails are well-marked, with great picnic spots along the route.

  2. Day2

Huel Lee Cave, Perekop Rock & Beaufort Castle

    Morning
Bus or drive to Consdorf or Berdorf. Explore Huel Lee Cave and Perekop Rock (climbable, fun for kids).
    Afternoon
Beaufort Castle — ruins deep in the forest.

Tip: Bring sturdy shoes — paths get slippery after rain.

  3. Day3

    Echternach & Lake Echternach

    All day
Explore Echternach's old town and abbey, then stroll to the lake for biking, picnicking or playing.

Tip: The lake and town centre are quieter early morning or in the evening.

Getting there

All public transport in Luxembourg is free — trains, trams and buses. Your gateway is Echternach, a lively little town and the hub for connections, shops and places to stay.

From Train Long-distance bus
Germany Trier → Luxembourg City (45–50 min) FlixBus / BlaBlaCar Bus to Luxembourg City
Belgium Brussels → Luxembourg City (3–4 h) FlixBus / BlaBlaCar Bus to Luxembourg City
Netherlands Amsterdam (via Maastricht or Brussels) → Luxembourg City Direct FlixBus to Luxembourg City

From Luxembourg City, take bus 110 or 111 straight to Echternach (about 1 h).

Getting around

Without a car: free buses from Echternach reach every trailhead — Mullerthal village, Consdorf, Berdorf and Beaufort — in 10–20 minutes. Services are lighter on Sundays and holidays, so check ahead.

By car: base yourself in Echternach (lots of parking). Every spot — Schiessentümpel, Kallektuffquell, Consdorf, Berdorf, Beaufort Castle, the lake — has its own small car park, and nothing is more than 15 minutes apart. Arrive early and avoid midday on weekends.

When to go & what to pack

  • Spring & autumn — mild, green, fewer visitors, lovely light.
  • Summer — warmest but busiest; do the highlights early or late.
  • Winter — for experienced hikers only (slippery, sometimes icy).

Pack sturdy boots, light and warm layers, a rain jacket, a reusable bottle and snacks, and a downloaded trail map.

Pro tips

  • Don't try to see everything. Pick what interests you and take your time.
  • Use the mobiliteit.lu app for real-time transport info.
  • Early mornings = quiet trails and the best experience.
  • Cards work almost everywhere, but carry a little cash for village bakeries.

Off the beaten trail

  • Village bakery breakfast in Berdorf or Consdorf — fresh bread, local vibes.
  • Forest shelters — wooden huts along quieter trails, perfect for a family break or a bit of journaling.
  • Hidden rock carvings — look for names and faces carved into the sandstone near Consdorf.
  • Wild foraging — wild garlic, berries or nuts in late spring and autumn. Pick only what you know.
  • Unmarked water spots — quiet stream bends and lakeshore corners for a quick splash.
  • Sunset plateau near Berdorf — open skies, all to yourself.
